1.4 TRANSLATOR:

RealmSpeak currently requires that you have Java 1.5 or greater.  That's fine if you are running a current OS, and this installation is available.  However, there are a number of you that cannot get Java 1.5, because your OS only supports Java 1.4.  The only example of this that I'm aware of, is if you are running on an older Mac, and don't have the latest Mac OS.  For some odd reason, you cannot install anything greater than Java 1.4, and thus RealmSpeak is unplayable.

Anyway, there is a solution.  One fan of the game pointed me to a utility that allows you to backwards translate a java program compiled for 1.5, into a Java 1.4 application:

       Retrotranslator

Very cool, and solves the problem described above nicely.  Though I still recommend that you get the latest Java version to play RealmSpeak, this solution may help those of you that cannot.

To make it as easy as possible, I've bundled all the files you need into one zip file:

       RealmSpeak Java 1.4 Translator

Extract the archive, and read the readme14.txt file for further instructions.

Once you convert RealmSpeak.jar into RealmSpeak14.jar, you will have to use one of the xxx14.bat files to launch the program every time.  Also, each new release of RealmSpeak will have to be converted this way.  I would do it for you, but it would make the downloads bigger, and really only benefit a handful of people.

Thanks to Jorge Arroyo for pointing me to this utility!
